Andrew Malone(Partner)

$Andrew Malone

Our longest serving partner, Andrew was locally educated at Kirkcudbright after moving to Kirkcudbright from the Falkland Islands. After graduating from Edinburgh University, he was admitted as a Solicitor in 1985. His main areas of work are in Residential, Commercial and Agricultural Property, Wills, Trusts and Executries, Guardianship and Powers of Attorney and Family Business and Small Business services . Andrew is the partner responsible for client relations and oversees the financial management of Hewats. He also has an interest in IT and new technology and their use in legal practice. He is an active member of the local Solicitors' Property Centre Management Committee and a past Dean of the local Faculty of solicitors. Outside the office he is a keen target archer as a member of the local Threave Bowmen Archery Club and is also involved in archery coaching. He enjoys reading and has far too many books despite acquiring an ebook reader.

Charles Laurie(Partner)

$Charles Laurie

Charles originally obtained an English Law degree from the University of Cambridge in 1975. Subsequently he qualified as a barrister in England before devoting himself to a family farm near Castle Douglas for a number of years. He returned to the law in the early 1990s, qualifying in Scots Law at Glasgow University before taking up a position originally as an associate with Hewats in 1993. Charles was assumed as a partner in the firm with effect from 1st April 2002.His principal practice areas are domestic and commercial conveyancing, civil and criminal litigation and employment law. With his agricultural background he has a particular interest in agricultural law and the law of the countryside. Outside the office his interests include fishing, country sports and opera.

Shani Power(Associate)

$Shani Power

Shani joined Hewats solicitors in April 2008 having previously worked and qualified as a solicitor in Ireland. Shani is dual-qualified in Scots and Irish law, and is a member of the Law Society of Scotland and the Law Society of Ireland. She obtained an honours law degree in 1998 from University College Dublin having spent one year studying at the University of Hanover in Germany. Shani was admitted to the Irish Roll of Solicitors in 2002, she also qualified that year as an Irish tax consultant. She is an Associate of the Irish Taxation Institute. Shani received her training and a number of years experience in general practice in a niche Dublin practice. Immediately prior to joining Hewats she worked as an associate solicitor specialising in property and executries in one of the top ten Irish commercial law firms. Shani’s practice is primarily focused on property and her interest and knowledge of other areas stem from this. Shani has a pragmatic, client focused approach to work which ensures that clients attain their objectives.

Lucy Best(Senior Solicitor)

$Lucy Best

Lucy graduated from Edinburgh University in 2008, with an honours degree in law. After leaving University she took up a traineeship with a local firm of solicitors before joining Hewats in 2010 as a fully qualified solicitor. Lucy is an Assistant Solicitor within the firm and regularly assists clients with Wills, Power of Attorney, residential conveyancing and family law matters. Lucy is conscious of the difficult economic times that currently face both business and private individuals and is keen to provide practical, affordable and realistic advice to secure the best outcome for her clients.

Claire McKenzie(Senior Solicitor)

$Claire McKenzie

Claire McKenzie joined the firm in August 2015 having previously practised in Lockerbie and Dumfries. Claire completed her undergraduate law degree at Edinburgh Napier University and her diploma in Professional Legal Practice at Glasgow School of Law after completing her traineeship with a local firm she then qualified in 2009.

 

As a family Law Specialist Claire is a member of Consensus Collaboration Scotland and The International Academy of Collaborative Professionals - One of only four such solicitors in the Dumfries and Galloway region. 

Claire is highly committed to the collaborative approach which offers a non confrontational way of agreeing the legal and practical arrangements for separation and divorce.

 

As well as family law, Claire also assists clients in areas of employment law, conveyancing, guardianship applications, powers of attorney and general dispute resolution.

Robert Oliver(Law Accountant)

$Robert Oliver

Robert is a longstanding employee of the firm. Robert became a member of the Society of Law Accounts in Scotland in November 1991. Following on from this he studied for his paralegal qualifications in Wills, Trusts and Executries through Strathclyde University, qualifying in February 2007. Robert assists the solicitors in the firm with Executry and Trust matters. Outside of work Robert is an elder of Tarff and Twynholm Church of Scotland and is also their treasurer.

Hewats' Property Department is headed by Marion Walker our Property Manager, and her Assistant Kerri Johnston.


Marion joined Hewats in October 2014 as the Office/Property Manager and is responsible for managing the Property Team and Legal Support Staff. Within in her role as the Property Manager, Marion assists clients in providing a free market appraisal of their property, advising them on the best marketing strategies as well as acting as sales negotiator to achieve an advantageous sale for the clients.

Kerri joined Hewats in December 1993 having had previous secretarial experience with Dumfries & Galloway Council. Kerri has accredited qualifications in Estate Agency work and, as well as attending to preparation of sales particulars, deal with all aspects of the Estate Agency including arranging viewings, accompanied viewings, and maintaining Hewats' Property Enquiry Database for prospective purchasers actively seeking properties in South West Scotland.
