Our office premises will remain closed to the public at present as the continued Health and Safety of our Staff and Clients remains our top priority. All viewings and valuations of properties and any face to face meetings within our office will require an appointment to be booked in advance, safety measures that have been implemented will need to be followed as per the guidance issued by the Scottish Government.

Meet our experienced team of professionals.


Andrew Malone


Our principal partner, Andrew was locally educated at Kirkcudbright Academy after moving to Kirkcudbright from the Falkland Islands. After graduating from Edinburgh University, he was admitted as a Solicitor in 1985. His main areas of are of work are in Residential, Commercial and Agricultural Property, Wills, Trusts and Executries, Powers of Attorney.  He also works in the small business and family business areas of practice.

Andrew is the Client Relations Manager of Hewats and oversees the management of Hewats. He is an active member of the local Solicitors’ Property Centre Management Committee an extension of his interest and involvement with Hewats Estate Agency services. He is also a past Dean of the local Faculty of solicitors. He is keen to maintain the advantages of a local high street legal practice at Hewats while adapting to the new challenges and opportunities that technology and changes to the legal sector offer.

Outside the office he is a keen target archer as a member of the local Threave Bowmen Archery Club and is also involved in archery coaching. He enjoys reading and his wife often complains, that he has far too many old books.

Helen Prentice


Helen grew up and was educated locally before graduating from the University of Dundee with an LLB (Hons) degree in Scot’s Law in 2012. Helen then moved back to the area and initially joined Hewats as a trainee solicitor in the Autumn of 2013 after obtaining her Diploma in Legal Practice from the University of Glasgow earlier that year. After successfully completing her traineeship and qualifying as a solicitor in 2015, Helen then took a sabbatical to travel around New Zealand and Australia, before returning to the firm in the spring of 2016.

Helen’s main areas of practice are residential and commercial property and private client matters, such as the preparation of Wills and Powers of Attorney and the administration/winding up of deceased people’s estates. Helen also deals with other small business-related matters, including debt recovery and some family law matters. She also has an interest in agricultural matters having grown up on local farm.

Outside of the office Helen enjoys travelling, socialising with family and friends, and trips to the theatre. She also enjoys being out and about in the countryside, whether that be walking, cycling or horse riding.

Kay Bird


Kay entered into law after leaving school and working for 10 years in London, firstly as a secretary for the British Red Cross Society and Department of Trade and Industry thereafter working in management for the Sport Council.  Kay went to Leicester University to undertake her Law Degree as a mature student and on qualification she practised for a number of years in South Yorkshire and Derbyshire before moving to Balmaclellan with her family, qualifying in Scot’s Law in 2009.

Kay has worked for a couple of law firms in Dumfries and Galloway, including working for Hewats from 2014-2015.  After a year’s sabbatical from law, Kay returned to practising and re-joined Hewats in 2018.  Kay’s specialisms are domestic and commercial property, Wills and Powers of Attorney.  Kay also has past experience in agricultural law.  Establishing strong and lasting client relationships is very important to Kay.

Kay has now moved down to Castle Douglas, and after spending  the majority of her spare time devoted to community matters in Balmaclellan she is enjoying having more time with her family, walking her chocolate Labrador, going to live screenings and films at the Fullarton Theatre, and curling up with a good book.

David Currie


Originally from Glasgow, David moved to the area with his family in 1980 and was locally educated at Castle Douglas High School. Thereafter, he obtained an honours degree in law at Aberdeen University, and completed his traineeship at Hewats. David then spent a number of years in Dumfries before returning to run a branch office in Castle Douglas for a Dumfries based firm.  A move to Dalbeattie followed with almost 12 years running a legal practice. David returned to Hewats in November 2018, and continues to practice in his preferred areas of work, property, wills and Powers of Attorney.

Outside the office David spends his time walking the family Dalmatian and attending football matches. He enjoys holidaying with his wife and step daughter in the North of Scotland, particularly on Royal Deeside.

Robert Oliver

Law Accountant

A longstanding employee of the firm, Robert became a member of the Society of Law Accounts in Scotland in November 1991. Following on from this, he studied for his paralegal qualifications in Wills, Trusts and Executries through Strathclyde University, qualifying in February 2007.

Robert assists the solicitors in the firm with Executry and Trust matters. Outside of work Robert is an elder of Tarff and Twynholm Church of Scotland, and is also their treasurer.

Marion Walker

Property Manager

Hewats’ Property Department is headed up by Marion Walker, our Property Manager.

Marion joined Hewats in October 2014 as the Office/Property Manager.

Marion is motivated by her desire to provide our clients with the best possible experience and is passionate about delivering great customer service to every client.

After spending most of her career in the retail sector and in public service, Marion is responsible for managing the Property Team and the Legal Support Staff, ensuring that each member of the team has the satisfaction of our clients as their primary concern.  Within her role as Property Manager, Marion uses her vast experience to assist clients by advising them on the best marketing strategies, as well as acting as a skilled sales negotiator to achieve an advantageous sale for our clients.  For most of us, our homes are our biggest assets and when the decision has been taken to sell our home, or indeed to buy another,  the importance of a good relationship with the selling agents cannot be overestimated.

In her spare time, Marion’s interests include rugby, walking and interior design.

Kerri Johnston

Property Assistant

Kerri has over 25 years’ experience with Hewats Solicitors & Estate Agency and over the years has become an integral part of the firm’s team, covering a multitude of key roles crucial to the efficient operation of the office and the Estate Agency Department.

Kerri is experienced in several areas of property management, enjoying liaising with clients and potential purchasers and sellers. Kerri’s role in property is to smoothly co-ordinate the administration and listing of new properties, viewings, and dealing with day to day sale enquiries, along with assisting new purchaser enquiries.

Outwith office hours, Kerri enjoys gardening, watching ice hockey (both home and away games) and spending time with family and friends.

Lisa Brown

Reception/Property Assistant

Lisa joined Hewats in September 2018 having had extensive experience in various administrative roles, including 8 years within the Planning and Building Standards Department of Dumfries and Galloway Council.

Lisa thoroughly enjoys her role as Property Assistant / Receptionist within the firm, particularly the aspect of liaising with clients and members of the public on a face to face basis.  Lisa lives in Castle Douglas and works part time. During her spare time she enjoys running, long walks and socialising with friends.
